The Great Mail Race

The Great American Mail Race is a project in which students “race” to get letters across the country to as many different states as possible before the end of the school year. This ongoing activity will reinforce letter writing skills, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, as well as map skills in a fun and interesting way!

Students will use a map to choose two states that they would like to contact. They will write letters telling about themselves, their school (Leeds Avenue School), their friends and families, and about Pleasantville, NJ. Together as a class, they brainstormed about Pleasantville’s economy, natural resources, and recreation opportunities. As a group, they decided which of these things they wanted to “showcase” to the classes they want to contact. Envelopes were addressed to Any Second Grade Class, using http://www.nces.ed.gov/nceskids/tools/ .
